Carpentras Map Poster & Print
Carpentras lies in the Vaucluse department of Provence, on the plain to the west of Mont Ventoux. From above, its historic centre is instantly recognisable: a compact, rounded core of narrow streets enclosed by a ring of boulevards laid out along the line of the old town walls. The Porte d'Orange, a surviving medieval gate, still stands on that ring.
The town was once the capital of the Comtat Venaissin, a papal territory, and its synagogue is often described as the oldest still in use in France. Carpentras is also known for its Friday market, its winter truffle market and the berlingot, a striped boiled sweet. Beyond the ring, the town gives way to orchards and vineyards.
