Chengjiang lies in the north-western part of Chongqing municipality, in the Beibei area, where the Jialing River winds through steep, wooded hills on its way to the city centre. On a map the town is shaped by this terrain: streets bend along contours, and building blocks fit into the narrow flat land between slopes and water.
Chongqing is famous for vertical cityscapes, and even at the scale of a smaller town the same principle applies. Roads switch back up the hillsides, embankments link separate levels, and green areas occupy ground too steep to build on. The result, seen from above, is an irregular, organic pattern quite unlike the planned grids of northern Chinese cities.
