Cienfuegos Map Poster & Print
Cienfuegos sits on the eastern shore of a large, nearly enclosed bay on Cuba's southern coast. The bay opens to the Caribbean only through a narrow channel. The city was founded in 1819 by French settlers from Bordeaux and Louisiana, and they gave it one of the most regular street plans in the Caribbean.
From above, the historic centre is an almost perfect grid of square blocks. A wide boulevard runs south from the centre down the Punta Gorda peninsula, which stretches into the bay like a thin finger. Around it, the coastline curves through inlets and small coves.
The historic centre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 as an exceptional example of early nineteenth-century urban planning. A Cienfuegos map poster makes that plan the subject. It shows a rigorous grid meeting a winding bay, and a single long street stretching out to its tip.

Enclosed bay
The wide, almost landlocked bay wraps around the city. Its only opening to the sea is a narrow channel guarded by an old fortress.
