Clinton lies on the west bank of the Mississippi River in eastern Iowa, facing Fulton, Illinois, across the water. The city stretches along the river for several miles, and that long shoreline defines its map. Streets run in a band parallel to the water, with bluffs behind and neighbourhoods climbing away from the riverfront. Islands, backwaters and side channels break up the river's edge.
In the nineteenth century Clinton grew rich on the timber trade. Logs were floated down the Mississippi to sawmills along its banks, and the city was once called a lumber capital. Clinton later absorbed the neighbouring town of Lyons to the north, which explains the two older street grids on the plan. Road bridges cross to Illinois, and a rail bridge spans the river nearby.

Road and rail bridges cross the Mississippi to Fulton and the Illinois shore. They are drawn as fine lines spanning the broad water between two states.
Lyons district
To the north, the former town of Lyons, merged into Clinton in the 1890s, keeps its own street grid and small centre. It is visibly distinct from downtown to the south.
