Condeixa-a-Nova lies a short distance south of Coimbra, in central Portugal. The town itself is compact, with a historic centre of narrow streets and small squares, and newer housing spreading along the roads that leave it. The surrounding land is rolling and green, cut by valleys and dotted with villages.
The municipality is best known for Conímbriga, one of the most important Roman sites in Portugal. Its remains, including houses with extensive mosaic floors and sections of the city walls, lie just outside the modern town and are a regular stop for visitors to the Coimbra region.
