Cuenca Map Poster
Cuenca lies at around 2,500 metres in the southern Andes of Ecuador, in a wide valley crossed by four rivers: the Tomebamba, Yanuncay, Tarqui and Machángara. From above, their parallel, winding courses divide the city into bands of streets, with green riverbanks running between them.
The historic centre sits on a terrace above the Tomebamba and keeps the regular grid laid out by the Spanish in 1557. Its blocks are dense and even, arranged around Parque Calderón, where the large blue-domed New Cathedral faces the older one. The old centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.
Cuenca is also the main centre for weaving toquilla straw hats, known abroad as Panama hats. A Cuenca map poster shows a colonial grid held between rivers and mountains, one of the clearest historic plans in South America.
