Damiao lies in the western part of Chongqing municipality, in the rolling uplands of the Sichuan Basin. This is country of low hills rather than high mountains, and from above the land looks crumpled into countless small ridges and hollows. Settlements here rarely follow a straight grid, and the roads around Damiao take their shape from the terrain they cross.
On a map of this landscape, the most expressive lines are often the smallest: farm tracks curling around hillsides, lanes that split and rejoin along valley bottoms, and the scattered outlines of ponds and small reservoirs that are common across the region. Built-up areas tend to gather where the ground is flattest.
