Destelbergen lies just east of Ghent in East Flanders, close enough to feel the city but still marked by open space. From above, the municipality is a patchwork of residential streets, fields, small woods and water. The Scheldt forms part of its edge, and its curving course and the old meanders nearby give the map its most distinctive shapes.
The municipality combines the village of Destelbergen itself with Heusden, each with its own cluster of streets around a church. Between them, newer residential areas spread along roads leading out of Ghent. Green spaces and the traces of old river bends break up the built-up zones and keep the landscape feeling open rather than continuously suburban.
