Dubai runs along the coast of the Arabian Gulf in a long, narrow band, with most development between the shore and the desert inland. The historic heart lies around Dubai Creek, a natural inlet that divides Deira on one side from Bur Dubai on the other. On a map, the creek is the one old, winding line in a city otherwise shaped by planning.
Sheikh Zayed Road runs parallel to the coast as the main axis, lined with towers including the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. Offshore, Palm Jumeirah spreads its fronds into the sea, one of the most recognisable artificial landforms anywhere, and the islands of The World sit further out as a scattered cluster of shapes.
Near the creek, the Al Fahidi historic district keeps narrow lanes and wind-tower houses from before the oil era.
