Ensenada lies on the Pacific coast of Baja California, around the wide curve of Todos Santos Bay. From above, the city fills a strip of flat land between the water and a ring of dry hills. The centre follows a clear grid close to the harbour, while newer neighbourhoods climb into the surrounding slopes and valleys along winding roads.
The port is one of the most important on Mexico's Pacific coast and a regular stop for cruise ships from California. Inland, the Valle de Guadalupe has become known as the country's leading wine region, and to the south the La Bufadora blowhole draws visitors to the rocky coast of the Punta Banda peninsula.
An Ensenada map poster is shaped by that meeting of sea and hills. The bay spreads across one side as a smooth arc, the harbour's breakwaters and piers make crisp lines along the shore, and the grid of the centre gradually loosens as the streets reach the higher ground.
