Espinosa is in the far north of Minas Gerais, close to the state line with Bahia. The surrounding landscape is semi-arid sertão: open country with scrub, farmland and long dirt roads. The town itself stands out as a compact, deliberate shape in that openness, with streets laid out in blocks around a central area and a main road passing through.
Many towns in inland Brazil follow a similar plan, and Espinosa's map shows it clearly. The core is a regular grid with a church square, and the neighbourhoods at the edges become looser as they meet the fields. Beyond them, rural roads spread out towards farms and smaller settlements. Their lines are straight where the land is flat and they bend where it rises.
