Foça Map Poster
Foça lies on the Aegean coast north of İzmir, built around two bays: the larger Büyük Deniz and the smaller, sheltered Küçük Deniz, where fishing boats moor along the waterfront. A short peninsula separates them, and small islands lie offshore. On a map the coastline is the defining line, with streets following the shore and climbing the hills behind.
The town stands on the site of ancient Phocaea, whose sailors founded colonies across the Mediterranean, including Massalia, today's Marseille. The name is linked to the Mediterranean monk seal, which still lives in the protected waters nearby, and the coast includes the rocks known as the Siren Rocks.
