Gebze Map Poster & Print
Gebze lies in Kocaeli Province at the eastern edge of the Istanbul metropolitan area, where the main highways and railway toward Anatolia run along the Gulf of İzmit. On a map it is a town of two scales. The older centre is a compact knot of streets on the slopes, while around it sprawl large organised industrial zones, logistics sites and residential estates.
The town has a long past. In antiquity the settlement of Libyssa stood nearby, and tradition holds that the Carthaginian general Hannibal died there. In the sixteenth century the Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan built the Çoban Mustafa Paşa complex in the centre. Today Gebze is best known as a hub of industry and research, home to a technical university and major science parks.
