Guidonia Map Poster & Print
Guidonia is part of the comune of Guidonia Montecelio, east of Rome. On a map it's unusual. The town was founded in the late 1930s around an airfield and aeronautical research centre, and its planned streets sit beside the long, open rectangle of the runway. Above it, on a hill, is the much older village of Montecelio, with the compact, curving lanes of a medieval hill town.
The town was named after Alessandro Guidoni, an aviation engineer and general. Its architecture and plan reflect the rationalist style of that period. The surrounding plain has long been known for travertine quarries near Tivoli, and large quarry pits mark the landscape to the east. Today the area has grown into a sizeable suburb of the capital.
