Gusinoozyorsk lies in the Republic of Buryatia, in southern Siberia, on the shore of Lake Gusinoye, whose name means Goose Lake. The lake is the dominant shape on the map, a broad sheet of water with the town set along its bank. Around it rise low hills and open steppe, typical of the Transbaikal landscape.
The town grew in the Soviet period around coal mining and energy. Its planned streets form a regular grid with blocks of apartment buildings, and a large power station on the lake shore is one of the most visible features on the map. Not far away is the Tamchinsky datsan, a historic Buddhist monastery, reflecting the region's Buryat heritage.
