Havířov Map Poster & Print
Havířov is one of the youngest towns in the Czech Republic, founded in the 1950s to house workers for the coal mines of the Ostrava region. Its name comes from the Czech word for miner. From above, it looks strikingly planned: long straight avenues, symmetrical housing blocks and large open courtyards set out according to a single design.
The oldest part of the town was built in the socialist realist style of the early 1950s, with ornamented facades and formal street axes, while later districts use prefabricated panel blocks arranged more loosely. The Lučina River runs along the town's edge, and the Těrlicko reservoir lies close by to the southwest.
