Hazebrouck lies in French Flanders, in the Nord department close to the Belgian border. The land here is almost perfectly flat, and on a map that flatness shows in a town that spreads evenly in every direction from its centre. The market square and its large church sit at the heart, with streets running out in a loose star toward the farmland and villages of the Flemish plain.
Hazebrouck is also an important railway junction. Lines toward Lille, Dunkirk and Calais meet here, and on the map their long, gently curving tracks cut across the street pattern, reaching well beyond the town.
