Hazelwood is a suburb in north St. Louis County, Missouri, spread across rolling land near Lambert airport and the Missouri River. Its map is a clear picture of postwar American growth: curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs in one area, large rectangular blocks of industry and warehousing in another, all tied together by broad arterial roads.
Interstate 270 cuts across the city as a strong, sweeping line, with interchanges that appear as loops and knots on the drawing. Toward the north the land falls toward the river, where the street pattern thins and the wide channel of the Missouri begins to shape the edge of the map.
