Hereford is the seat of Deaf Smith County, on the High Plains of the Texas Panhandle, west of Amarillo. The land is almost perfectly flat, and the town is built to match. It has a straightforward street grid, wide blocks and long section-line roads that run out in every direction across irrigated farmland.
Hereford calls itself the Beef Capital of the World, a reference to the large cattle feedlots and meat-processing industry in the surrounding county. The railroad cuts through town on a diagonal. Grain elevators beside the tracks are the tallest structures for miles, a familiar sight across the Plains.
A Hereford map poster captures the geometry of the Great Plains in miniature. The grid sits squarely in the frame, the rail line slices across it at an angle, and the surrounding roads extend in straight lines to the edge of the paper. The rail line crosses the town at an angle to the grid. It is the one line that breaks the right angles, and it gives the composition energy and direction.
Section-line roads
Outside town, roads follow the land survey in long straight lines about a mile apart. They make a large-scale grid of fields that reaches the edges of the map.
