Hickory lies in the western Piedmont of North Carolina, in the foothills below the Blue Ridge. Its map is defined by two strong features: the Catawba River, dammed into the long, branching Lake Hickory along the northern edge, and Interstate 40, which cuts east to west across the southern part of town.
The city grew as a rail and manufacturing centre and became widely known for furniture making, an industry that still gives the area its reputation. Its older core sits around the rail corridor, with a modest grid of downtown blocks, while later development spreads outward along wide commercial roads and into looping residential subdivisions.
Lenoir-Rhyne University adds a campus of curving paths and green space near the centre. On a Hickory map poster, the contrast between the jagged lake shoreline, the straight rail line and the winding suburban streets makes for a surprisingly layered composition, especially at the larger sizes.
