Hildesheim Map Poster & Print
Hildesheim lies at the northern edge of the Lower Saxon hill country, south-east of Hanover, where the Innerste river flows past the western side of the old town. From above, the historic centre forms a rough oval. Ring roads and green walkways enclose it along the line of the former walls. The cathedral hill and the market square are its two focal points.
Two of its churches, St Mary's Cathedral and St Michael's, are listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their Romanesque architecture and art. The thousand-year rosebush grows against the cathedral apse. It survived the destruction of 1945 and still blooms each year. The Market Square, with its reconstructed timber-framed Butchers' Guild Hall, was rebuilt after the war.
