Huercal-Overa lies in the northeast of Almería Province, close to the border with the Region of Murcia. The old town climbs the slopes below a medieval castle tower, with narrow, irregular streets typical of settlements of Moorish origin, while newer districts spread across the flatter land below in a more regular pattern. The contrast between hill and plain shapes the whole map.
The municipality covers a wide area of dry hills, ramblas and farmland in the Almanzora country, with scattered hamlets and farmhouses linked by rural roads. Dry riverbeds wind across the land and appear on the map as broad channels. The town is known throughout the region for its Holy Week processions, organised by long-standing and famously competitive brotherhoods.
