Ios Map Poster
Ios lies in the southern Cyclades between Naxos and Santorini, a hilly island with a rough, irregular outline. From above it is almost empty inland, with bare hills and valleys and only a few roads. Most of its life is concentrated on the west coast, where a deep bay shelters the port and the main village rises on the slope above.
Chora sits on a hillside above the harbour, its whitewashed lanes forming a dense, tangled pattern, with windmills along the ridge. A road runs down to the long beach at Mylopotas, and another winds across the island to the southern bay of Manganari. The rest of the coast breaks into coves reached mostly by track or by boat.
An old tradition holds that Homer died and was buried on Ios, and a site in the north of the island is associated with his tomb. Today it is known for summer nightlife and beaches.
