Irecê lies in north-central Bahia, on a broad plateau in the semi-arid interior of northeastern Brazil, north of the Chapada Diamantina. The land around it is flat and largely given over to agriculture, so on a map the town appears as a clear block of streets surrounded by rectangular fields and straight rural roads.
The town is the main centre of its micro-region and is known in Bahia for farming, especially beans, which earned it a reputation as a regional bean capital. It serves a large surrounding area with commerce, schools and health services, and its layout reflects steady growth outward from a central core.
