Istālif Map Poster & Print
Istālif sits on the slopes of the Paghman mountains, looking out over the Shomali plain north of Kabul. From above, the village is shaped entirely by its hillside: lanes wind up the slope, houses sit on terraces, and a stream cuts down through the valley below. Orchards and gardens fill the lower ground, giving the settlement a soft green edge on the real landscape.
It is famous for its pottery, especially the glazed turquoise and green ceramics made in family workshops. Istālif has also long been admired as a place of gardens and fresh air, and the Mughal emperor Babur wrote about its beauty in his memoirs. It has been a favoured retreat for people from Kabul for generations.
