Izegem lies in West Flanders, between Roeselare and the river Lys. On the map, the town's centre forms around the Mandel valley, with the canal from Roeselare to the Lys running straight past it. The older streets meet at irregular angles around the market square, while the outskirts are laid out in more regular residential blocks.
The town grew as a centre of shoe and brush making, crafts that shaped its economy for generations and are remembered in a local museum. The canal and railway supported that industry, and their lines are still clear on a modern map, running through a landscape of fields, farms and smaller villages.
