Jurm lies in the Badakhshan province of north-eastern Afghanistan, in the valley of the Kokcha River south of Fayzabad. On the map, the valley floor is a narrow strip of fields and settlements between steep mountains, and roads and villages follow the course of the river closely.
The town itself is small and spread out, with houses and lanes clustered along the valley and on the lower slopes. Irrigated fields extend along the river, and beyond them the map opens into mountainous terrain with few roads, underscoring how much the valley shapes daily life.
The Kokcha valley has long been a route toward the lapis lazuli deposits further upstream, mined in this region for thousands of years. A Jurm map poster reflects the essence of this landscape: a river, a valley, a scatter of settlements and the vast mountains surrounding them.
