Kalabagh stands on the right bank of the Indus, at the point where the river cuts out of the Salt Range and widens across the plain. The town is built into the hillside, with houses climbing the slope in close tiers. From above, the streets are short and irregular, pressed between the cliff and the water.
The hills around Kalabagh contain rock salt, and the reddish salt cliffs are known well beyond the district. The town is also the historic seat of the Nawabs of Kalabagh. More recently, its name has become associated with the long-debated Kalabagh Dam project on the Indus nearby.
On paper, the broad river channel and the tight, hill-hugging town make a strong composition. A Kalabagh map poster shows the Indus as a wide open band next to a dense cluster of streets, with rough terrain behind them.
