Kanaishima is in western Kanagawa Prefecture, on the Ashigara plain, a flat basin between the Hakone mountains and the hills leading toward Tanzawa. From above, it looks like a small group of streets and houses among rice fields, with the Sakawa River valley and local rail lines nearby.
This part of Kanagawa is a mix of farming and commuter settlement, with small towns strung along the rail lines that connect to Odawara and beyond. The plain is flat and densely cultivated, and the surrounding mountains rise abruptly at its edges, framing the view on a clear day.
