Kandhar, often written Kandahār, is a town in the Nanded district of Maharashtra, in the Marathwada region of the Deccan plateau. On a map, the old town gathers in a compact cluster of irregular lanes. Roads lead out across open farmland, and the large footprint of the historic fort stands out at its edge.
Kandhar's fort is its best-known landmark, a sizeable fortification with walls and a moat that dates back many centuries and passed through the hands of several Deccan dynasties. The town sits in a landscape of black-soil farmland, and water bodies nearby add rounded shapes to the plateau's otherwise even surface.
