Khandbari is the headquarters of Sankhuwasabha district in eastern Nepal. It lies on a ridge high above the Arun, one of the deepest river valleys in the Himalaya. On a map, the town's shape is set by the terrain. Streets run along the ridgeline and wrap around its shoulders, and the hillsides drop away in steep, terraced slopes.
The town is best known as a gateway to the Makalu-Barun region, where trekking routes lead north toward the world's fifth-highest mountain. Roads climb in hairpin bends from the valley floor to reach the ridge. Farm terraces cover the slopes around the town in fine, curving lines that follow the contours of the land.
A Khā̃dbāri̇̄ map poster is a study of a mountain settlement. The narrow built-up strip on the ridge, the roads zigzagging up to it and the Arun deep below together give an unusual, vertical sense of place, even in a flat black and white print.
