Kharar lies in Mohali district in Punjab, just west of Chandigarh and Mohali, on the main road leading toward Ropar and the Shivalik foothills. The land is flat and well watered, and the town has grown quickly as part of the wider Chandigarh region. On a map an older, irregular centre is surrounded by large new residential colonies and highway frontage.
Once a small market town serving surrounding villages, Kharar now houses many people who work in Chandigarh, Mohali and the nearby industrial and educational institutions. That growth is written plainly into its street pattern: tight lanes in the old core, then rows of planned blocks, gated enclaves and wide roads added over the past two decades.
