Khomeyn lies on the high plateau of Markazi province, at the edge of the Zagros foothills. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets and blocks around an older centre. Main roads cross it in several directions. Around it, cultivated fields and orchards mark the land along watercourses, and dry, open hills surround them.
The town is best known as the birthplace of Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the 1979 Iranian Revolution, and his family house is now a museum. The surrounding region is agricultural, and the town serves as a local centre for trade and services in this part of Markazi.
