Kokhma lies on the Uvod river just southeast of Ivanovo, so close that the two cities almost form one continuous built-up area. On a map, Kokhma shows a small historic core near the river, streets of low wooden houses around it, and larger blocks of mills and apartment buildings from the Soviet period spreading along the main roads.
Like Ivanovo, Kokhma grew as a centre of textile production, and its mills along the Uvod once set the rhythm of daily life.
