Kunwi Map Poster & Print
Kunwi, more often written Gunwi, is the seat of a rural county lying north of the Palgongsan mountains. Long part of North Gyeongsang Province, Gunwi County was transferred into Daegu Metropolitan City in 2023, though it keeps a strongly agricultural character. On a map the town is small and orderly, a neat block of streets set in a valley of fields, orchards and low hills.
The county is known for the Gunwi Three-Buddha Grotto, a cave shrine carved into a cliff face during the Silla period and designated a National Treasure of Korea. It predates the better-known Seokguram grotto in Gyeongju. Around it, and across the county, mountain roads, small reservoirs and farm tracks fill the landscape between the ridges.

South of the county the Palgongsan range rises in steep, forested ridges, where roads thin out into winding lines through the mountains.
