Libertyville lies in Lake County, Illinois, north of Chicago, with the Des Plaines River running along its eastern side through a wide band of forest preserves. The village grew along Milwaukee Avenue, which still forms its main street, and on a map the older grid around downtown gives way to curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs further out.
Libertyville has a number of well-known connections. Adlai Stevenson II, twice Democratic presidential nominee, lived on a farm nearby that is now a historic site, and Marlon Brando spent part of his youth in the village. A Metra line runs through the town, linking it to downtown Chicago.
