Los Alcázares Map Poster & Print
Los Alcázares stands on the western shore of the Mar Menor, the large saltwater lagoon in the Region of Murcia. The land here is very flat, and the town spreads along the water in a long band. Seafront promenades and holiday developments make up much of the grid behind the shore.
The name comes from the Arabic al-qasr, a reference to buildings from the Moorish period. Today the most recognisable features on the shore are the balnearios, small wooden piers with bathing huts that step out into the calm water. Dry riverbeds known as ramblas cross the town toward the lagoon and carry water after heavy autumn rain.
