Madera is in western Chihuahua, high in the Sierra Madre Occidental. It grew as a logging and railway town, and the name, which means wood, reflects that history. The town is laid out as a straightforward grid on a relatively flat stretch of upland, with the forested mountains all around.
The municipality is also known for archaeological sites, especially the Cuarenta Casas cliff dwellings, which were built into canyon walls centuries ago by people of the Paquimé culture. On a map, the difference is clear: an orderly town grid on a plateau, with rugged canyon country beyond it.
