Mahires sits on the southern Tunisian coast, south of Sfax, where the land meets the Gulf of Gabès along an almost ruler-straight edge. From above, the town is a compact grid of short streets running back from the sea, with the coast road tracing the shoreline and a thinner web of lanes giving way to open agricultural land.
Beyond the built-up area, the map turns into the pattern this region is known for: long, regular plots of olive trees laid out in rows, bounded by tracks that cut across the flat plain. The contrast between the dense town and the measured geometry of the groves gives the drawing a quiet, horizontal rhythm, with the sea as a clean empty field on one side.
Mahires is also known for its international festival of plastic arts, held for decades and drawing artists to the seafront.
