Mannheim Map Poster & Print
Mannheim's centre is one of the most recognisable city plans in Germany. Instead of street names, the blocks inside the old town are identified by a letter and a number, such as A1 or Q7, creating a grid known as the Quadratestadt. On the map, these squares form a rounded shape, with the palace closing its southern end and ring roads surrounding the rest.
The Rhine runs along the city's western side, and the Neckar joins it from the east, curving around the northern edge of the centre. Their harbours, bridges and port basins take up much of the map beyond the grid. The baroque palace, now used by the university, is one of the largest in Europe, and its long facade faces the grid of the city it was designed to rule.
A Mannheim map poster is mostly about geometry: the neatly divided squares, the curved ring around them and the two rivers meeting in broad bends. Few cities show their design so clearly from above. The result feels orderly and graphic, well suited to minimalist black-and-white printing.
