Maradong lies in Sarawak, on the island of Borneo, in the low-lying country of the Rajang river basin. This is a landscape shaped by water, with broad rivers, tributaries and swampy ground, and from above the settled areas appear as clusters along roads and riverbanks surrounded by plantations and forest.
A Maradong map poster captures this interplay of land and water. The town's streets form a small, compact centre, while roads extend outward along the drier ground and rivers wind through the landscape in wide curves. The combination of rivers and straight plantation roads gives the map a layered, textured look.
Communities in this part of Sarawak have traditionally depended on rivers for transport and trade, and many towns in the region grew around riverside shophouses and jetties. Today the surrounding land is widely used for agriculture, and roads link the area to other towns in the Sarikei and Sibu areas of central Sarawak.
