Markham Map Poster
Markham lies northeast of Toronto in York Region, and its map is built on the survey grid that divided southern Ontario into concessions and lots. Major roads run in straight lines at regular intervals, forming large squares that were once farmland. Within those squares, suburban streets curve into crescents and cul-de-sacs, a pattern typical of postwar growth across the region.
The Rouge River and its tributaries cut through this orderly frame, their green valleys winding across the grid, and part of Rouge National Urban Park lies on the city's eastern side. Highways 404 and 407 cross Markham, which has become a centre for technology companies. The main street of Unionville preserves the scale of a nineteenth-century village.
