Mawu lies in the Chongqing municipality in southwestern China, a region of steep hills, narrow valleys and terraced slopes. From above, the town is shaped by the terrain rather than by a planned grid: streets gather where the ground levels out, and roads leave town along valleys, curving around hillsides instead of running straight.
Little detailed information about Mawu is widely published, so the map itself tells most of the story. Settlement in this part of Chongqing tends to cluster along rivers and road corridors, with farmland and scattered villages filling the lower slopes, and that general pattern is visible around the town as well.
