Meise lies in Flemish Brabant, just beyond the northern edge of Brussels. On a map it appears as a collection of village centres rather than a single town, connected by country roads and separated by fields, woodland and parkland. The main road north from Brussels runs through the municipality, giving it a clear central axis.
The largest green space on the map is the park of Bouchout Castle, home to Meise Botanic Garden, one of the largest botanical gardens in the world. Its lakes, lawns and woodland paths form a broad open shape close to the built-up areas, and the castle itself sits on a small moated island within the grounds.
