Memmingen Map Poster & Print
Memmingen lies in the Bavarian part of Swabia, close to the Iller valley and the border with Baden-Württemberg, on the northern edge of the Allgäu. The map shows a remarkably well-defined old town, still partly enclosed by medieval walls, towers and gates, with a web of narrow streets inside and larger modern districts spreading around it.
For centuries Memmingen was a free imperial city, answerable only to the emperor. In 1525, during the German Peasants' War, the Twelve Articles were drawn up here, a list of demands often described as one of the earliest written statements of liberty in Europe. Today the town is also known for its regional airport, which serves much of southern Germany.
