Mérida Map Poster
Mérida is built on flat limestone in the north of the Yucatán Peninsula, and its centre follows a strict colonial grid. The streets are numbered rather than named: even numbers run north to south, odd numbers east to west. At the centre is the Plaza Grande, and on its eastern side stands the cathedral, one of the oldest on the American mainland.
The Spanish founded the city in 1542 on the site of the Maya city of T'ho, reusing its stones for new buildings. In the late nineteenth century, wealth from the henequen fibre trade paid for the Paseo de Montejo, a broad boulevard lined with mansions that extends north from the old centre.
A Mérida map poster shows the grid spreading evenly from the plaza, the long diagonal-free line of the Paseo and the ring road, the Periférico, circling the city at a distance. Because there are no rivers on the surface, the pattern of streets fills the map uninterrupted, with parks scattered in its blocks.
