Methuen sits in the Merrimack Valley of northeastern Massachusetts, bordering Lawrence to the south and New Hampshire to the north. Like its neighbours, it grew around mill-era industry, and the older centre near the Spicket River still has a denser, more traditional street pattern than the suburban neighbourhoods around it.
On a map, Methuen is a varied mix: a compact historic core, curving residential streets that follow the rolling ground, ponds and wooded patches, and the wide corridors of Interstates 93 and 495 cutting across the city. The Merrimack River touches its southern edge and gives the composition a strong lower boundary.
A Methuen map poster reflects that layered New England character. The city is also known for the Methuen Memorial Music Hall, which houses a celebrated pipe organ.
