Mīt Ghamr lies in Dakahlia Governorate, on the east bank of the Damietta branch of the Nile, in the heart of the delta. On the map, the river runs past the town as a broad ribbon, with Zifta on the opposite bank. Bridges join the two towns, and together they form a single urban area divided by water.
The land around the town is some of the most intensively farmed in Egypt. Canals and drains divide it into narrow strips of fields, and villages are scattered in a dense network. The town grew as a market and trading centre for the surrounding countryside and remains one of Dakahlia's main towns.
A Mīt Ghamr map poster captures the typical delta pattern. The Nile flows through the middle of the composition, the compact streets of the town press against its bank, and around them, canals and field boundaries create a fine, almost textile-like background.
