Moineşti follows a river valley in the Subcarpathian hills of Bacău County. From above it is a stretched town, with streets running along the valley floor and side roads climbing short distances into the slopes on either side. The shape is linear, not radial, and the river holds the whole plan together.
The hills around Moineşti have produced oil since the nineteenth century, and the town grew up with the industry. It also has a cultural footnote beyond its size. Tristan Tzara, one of the founders of Dada, was born here in 1896. In the 1880s, Jewish families from Moineşti were among the early settlers who helped found Rosh Pina in present-day Israel.
