Mon Map Poster
Mon is the headquarters of Mon District in the northern part of Nagaland, in India's far northeast, close to the border with Myanmar. The town is built on hilly ground. On the map its roads twist along ridges and around slopes, forming a loose, branching network rather than a grid.
The district is home to the Konyak Naga people. They are known for their tradition of facial tattoos, for the authority of their hereditary chiefs, called Anghs, and for a past as warrior headhunters that ended in the twentieth century. Villages such as Longwa, which straddles the international border, draw visitors from across India and beyond.
A Mon map poster shows a mountain town shaped entirely by its terrain: switchback roads, houses stepping down hillsides, and green valleys falling away on every side. Its lines are irregular and expressive. The sense of height comes through even in a flat, monochrome print, where the curves of the roads trace the contours of the land.
